What is a blog?

Posted August 17, 2009 in WMH Site Updates

The recent site redesign included the addition of a blog. I felt that it would be useful to explain what blogs are and how the differ from articles at Western Mining History. Definitions of blogs can vary based on who's authoring them but here at WMH the purpose of the blog is to create a venue to communicate with site users in a way that is less formal than the article section allows for. Articles are more formal documents - most of which will be scanned books or documents or information republished from sources like the USGS. Blogs are less formal and can range from information on recent site updates to trip reports from when I am on the road photographing mining towns. Blogs will also be useful in highlighting site content like in this example where I have posted two photos of a historic structure more than a hundred years apart. WMH has thousands of photos and documents and the blog will be useful in highlighting interesting content that might otherwise be overlooked.

I have also removed the forum in this new site iteration so the blog will become the venue with which I interact with site users. User comments aren't quite ready yet but check back in late September and join us for discussions on topics related to mining history and the American West.
